What is tentpegging

Just a quick overview for those who haven't seen this sport before

Nothing to do with camping or tents, but instead a game designed, probably by bored cavalrymen where they had an abundance of horses and wooden tentpegs and decided to see who could "spear" one with their lance at a flat out gallop on a horse. Rumours have it that this was to remove the enemies tentpegs at night to collapse the tent, or to spear an elephant in between their toes, however I am not convinced either are entirely practical in a battle situation.

Today "Tentpegging" is the collective name for all mounted skill at arms - so in very basic terms riding a horse whilst playing with lances, swords and guns. All real weapons I might add!

At the moment I am packing my 1908 India pattern (aka the girlie hand grip) sword in my luggage, and the lance at 2.5m is going in a tube separately. At the international there is no skill at arms, so fortunately guns are not required!

The classes at the International competition will be:
  • Individual Lance
  • Individual Sword
  • Team Lance
  • Team Sword
  • Indian File
  • Lemon cutting & peg
  • Rings and Peg
Indian file is where you run one after another, single file, to pick up the pegs, this has the danger of getting too close to the person in front, or lagging behind and slowing down the team.

Lemon cutting is slicing fruit with the sword, you must remember your sunnies for this one, as otherwise it can get rather painful as you do get splatted as you cut!

In all cases the classes are timed, so you have to feel the need for speed!
